Environment

Both as a company and in partnership with our network of growers, Café Bom Dia is committed to developing and strengthening sustainable practices to protect the environment and combat the threat of climate change.

CarbonNeutral

In 2007 and 2008, Café Bom Dia reduced its CO2 emissions to net zero in accordance with the CarbonNeutral Protocol. As a result, we are one of the world's largest coffee producers to achieve CarbonNeutral® status as verified by an independent organization.

In 2007, Café Bom Dia converted its roasting furnaces to run on renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels. Switching to renewable fuels such as sustainably forested eucalyptus and post-production coffee trees reduced Café Bom Dia's energy costs by 74%, reduced its usage of fossil fuels by 7.67 gallons per 1,000 pounds of roasted coffee and dramatically reduced its emissions that contribute to climate change. This fuel conversion, other adaptations at the plant and the purchase of offsets reduced Café Bom Dia's carbon emissions to net zero and qualified Café Bom Dia to become a CarbonNeutral Certified company.

ISO 14001 – the International Environmental Standard

In 2000, we achieved the internationally recognized ISO 14001 standard for environmental management systems for our roasting facility in Varginha, Brazil.

In recent years, we have introduced a range of programs and improvements which have had a major impact on our environmental performance. These include:

  • replacing our diesel-fueled roasters with energy-efficient biomass models
  • converting our fleet of company cars to 25% biofuels
  • reducing energy use at our roasting facility by 71% through equipment upgrades
  • introducing recycling programs to reduce waste to landfill by 87%
  • introducing equipment retrofits at our roasting facility to reduce water usage by 63%.

"We continue to look at all aspects of our operations and to set ourselves ambitious targets for ways in which we can improve our environmental performance."
